One wrong click, a huge impact

Everyone falls for a phishing mail once in a while. Criminals are getting increasingly better at social engineering: they use information that can be found on the Internet (website, LinkedIn, Facebook) to convince you with a credible story. Once persuaded, you may click or transfer money. A study by PwC shows that 53% of the Belgian companies dealt with cyber crime last year...

On behalf of one of our contacts we have recently received an invitation for a dropbox document, a so-called 'business proposal'. We contacted this person by the email address in our CRM platform to ask him if he had sent it, because this was a peculiar message. A few seconds later we were told to look at the business proposal by clicking a link - it looked like an out of office message. That immediately set off alarm bells.

3 tips!

Procedure for opening emails

Provide clear guidelines for your employees. What should they do when they receive a suspicious mail? Mobile devices require special attention. It may be more difficult to recognize a phishing attempt on your phone or tablet.

Create awareness in your company

Cyber criminals count on people having a busy schedule, which reduces their alertness to phishing attempts. Make sure that the procedures are often brushed up and tested internally.

Notify the authorities in case of hacking

Notify the incident to the CERT (federal Computer Emergency Response Team) via this report form. You can also report the incident to the local police. They will pass on the information to the Federal Computer Crime Unit, who will start an investigation. If personal data should get lost during the incident, the Data Protection Authority must be notified within 72 hours after discovery. (Source: FOD Economie)
